Wisconsin health plans reduce variation in health care by, for example, adopting treatment protocols, conducting studies and working with providers on improving care. Nationally, variation in health care results in up to 81,000 deaths and $3.9 billion in avoidable health care costs.

Wisconsin health plans’ collaboration in a diabetes care improvement project established a new standard of care for diabetes management. Treating diabetes consistent with recognized guidelines can reduce costs $691 per patient per year.
