(Madison) - Wisconsin Association of Health Plans Chief Executive Officer Nancy Wenzel issued the following statement in response to the bipartisan, 90 - 2 vote by the State Assembly to advance Assembly Bill 394, which would give the Joint Finance Committee oversight of changes to the health benefit programs for state, and many local government, employees:

We applaud the members of the Assembly for understanding that substantive changes to the State Group Health Program will affect much more than health insurance for state employees.

Wisconsin has built the most competitive health insurance market in the country with a regional system that works by providing consumers a choice of quality health plans. The State Group Health Program is a model for the country because of its effectiveness in promoting access to care and controlling costs. Assembly Bill 394 ensures the Joint Finance Committee can review proposed changes to the State Group Health Plan and consider whether they are in the best interests of the state, taxpayers and Wisconsin's unique and effective competitive health insurance market.
