MADISON - Today the Wisconsin Association of Health Plans (WAHP) announced that former State Rep. John Nygren accepted the position of Executive Director for the organization. He will officially join the Association later this month.

“On behalf of the Association’s Board of Directors, I am excited to make this announcement,” said Peter Farrow, Association Board President and CEO of Group Health Cooperative of Eau Claire. “John’s demonstrated leadership abilities and experience in the insurance industry make him an obvious choice to lead the Association into the future.”

Farrow said that the organization conducted an extensive search and interviewed a diverse range of candidates. In the end, Nygren’s range of experience in insurance and government, coupled with his proven ability to lead through complex issues, made the decision clear for the Association Board.

“I look forward to using my experience in health insurance and government to guide the Wisconsin Association of Health Plans,” said Nygren. “The pandemic has presented unique challenges for health care and forced the industry to quickly adjust to unique needs. My experience guiding complicated legislation into law will help the Association during these uncertain times.”

Farrow also again thanked outgoing Association CEO, Nancy Wenzel, as she completes her tenure with WAHP. Wenzel announced her intent to retire in early 2020, but then delayed her retirement to help lead WAHP through the tumultuous early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Nancy and I have worked together on health insurance issues in Wisconsin for well over 25 years,” Farrow said. “It is with very mixed emotions that I thank my good friend for her service as leader of the Association. Consumers in Wisconsin are far better off as a result of her community-minded advocacy when it comes to public policy. Her voice will be greatly missed.”

The Wisconsin Association of Health Plans is the voice of Wisconsin’s community-based health plans. Member health plans provide health insurance coverage in every Wisconsin county to individuals, employers, and government programs.
